As we begin the new year, we continually seek methods to enhance ourselves to fully realize our potential. In this article, we'll dive into various routines and engaging hobbies that can significantly improve your life.

Before we dive in, what fuels our relentless quest for self-improvement?
Isn't it thrilling how we, as humans, are propelled by the desire to become the best versions of ourselves? Achieving success fills us with incredible joy and satisfaction! While some tasks might seem draining, overcoming them and banishing those pesky negative thoughts unlocks our true potential. It's astounding what we can accomplish when we truly commit!
Not feeling good enough:
Sometimes we can feel a bit down especially when we've made a mistake or haven't reached the potential in which we wanted to give. During these moments it's vital to understand that we all can make mistakes and it's not about the mistake but our actions in which we do afterwards that can impact others.
Drive to be better than yesterday
Some individuals love to be better than yesterday and find achievement in reflecting back to who they were yesterday compared to Today. It's essential that we dive into our tasks and problems that we faced and how we reacted to that task at hand also, without doing this we can sometimes feel that we aren't in control of everyday situations.
Wanting to improve how we interact with others
This is very common for the vast majority of us, we can sometimes reflect back on previous encounters with other humans or tasks in which we dealt with wanting to improve the next encounter at hand. When reflecting on this be sure to remember that you can't control how others react or what they say.
Driven by goals/Future
We are often driven to go for our goals and achieve what we were meant to achieve in life, whether that could be family, relationships or career. This can be the driving force behind self improvement. When going for goals just remember that set-backs are inevitable and it's important to stick with a growth mindset
Now that you know the basics, what tools are out there to support us?
In my experience the list is absolutely endless! However these are some of the examples that have really helped me:
Meditation
Self-Help books
Cold showers
Weight-lifting
Walking/Running
Groups
Understanding of a Growth Mindset
Consumption of positive content
Restriction of social media usage
Great! What are these, and how can we begin implementing them in our lives?
That's a great question, and I'm glad you asked. Here is my take on what each of these tools are and how we can start to implement them in our daily life.
Meditation
What is meditation? The popular site 'Headspace' States that it's about training in awareness and getting a healthy perspective. In otherwards it's about seeing you're thoughts with a different perspective and helping you stay focused on the present.
Meditation can be practiced by yourself or with guided instructions. There's plenty of practices online to get you started or if you'd like to practice by yourself it's best to find a quite room, close your eyes and start counting you breathes. Don't worry if it feels like you aren't making progress or get distracted by your thoughts it takes time!
Self Help Books
Self help books are designed to offer readers insights and strategies to improve themselves, these books contain content that the writer has learnt by adopting strategies or based on scientific results.
There are many popular books that can be found online by searching 'Self help books' but one of my all time favourites was Jordan Peterson's titled "12 rules for life".
Cold Showers
We all know what this one is! For me this one is essential for starting my day, after waking up I'll make the bed and jump into the cold shower for 2 minuets before cranking up the heat. But why is it important for us? Cold showers help us train the mind that we are going to accomplish the task no matter how we feel, it helps the body and mind understand the concept of discipline and sets us up for the day.
A quick google search also suggests that it helps to boost alertness, improved circulation and increased mood.
Walking/Running:
We all know the importance of getting out and about but sometimes it can be difficult with such a busy routine. all forms of exercise are known for increasing mood, pro-longing life and reducing the risk of heart-attacks. But how can we incorporate it everyday? It's best to walk the short distances instead of taking the car or bringing the umbrella when it's raining outside. From my expereinces I always feel better after going for the walk or the run when I didn't want to.
Weightlifting
Weightlifting can improve mood, relieve stress, increase testosterone levels and help with a positive mindset. It's best to set a routine that fits in with your weekly tasks and set structured goals. To help you can always train with a friend or hire a professional.
Social groups
Social groups are a great way to improve our connections and meet new people.
This can be essential for us to share stories, help eachother, grow and regain confidence, You can find many new groups on popular social media sites such as facebook, instagram or even websites just like this! Head over to our groups page on the top right to join some of our socials.
Understanding a growth mindset
A growth mindset is a mind that always tries to learn either from a situation that happened or to understand things more clearly. Anyone can start to adapt a growth mindset by changing the way we think and it can drastically improve our lives.
Consumption of positive content
From the ever changing world and the distractions that we can face day to day it's important to realise that we are what we consume. Sometimes switching the news off to watch something that inspires you is the better option. This can drastically improve your mood and how you think.
Restriction of social media
It's not surprising how often each one of us uses social media, but a quick search on google can tell us that over using this powerful tool can create negative self talk and low self-esteem. Social media is a very powerful tool for us to connect but restricting it's usage can overall start to improve our health.
Final thoughts
With the ever changing world it's important that we choose habits that match our goals and ambitions, we all have a purpose and understanding why we are here and what we want to achieve can ultimately lead us to the life we want to live. These are only some insights of what habits have worked for me and are based on information that I have learnt either from my experience or through third party sites. Please be aware that everyone is different and that it's essential to build a routine that matches your life and goals.
Thanks for reading some of my insights and I really hope 2026 will be your best year so far.
